Wayne also dreamed of opening a museum containing items such as photographs and artifacts from the local Mt. Baker Foothills Community. This museum is the Gerdrum Homestead, which was built out of one cedar tree and is located at the Silver Lake Park, Maple Falls, WA. This location includes a large field for a demonstration site of equipment displays and practices, from old school techniques to new technologies. BMFC draws tourists, including families and people of all ages, as well as student groups for extended classroom education. Woodcrafters are invited to sell wood products and demonstrate how they make the products that we all enjoy today. This opportunity can provide an income for displaced loggers and cottage industries that would benefit from the Black Mountain Forestry Center.

  What's in the Woods?

Black Mountain Forestry Center is very proud of the educational programs we sponsor. One of our favorites is "What's in the Woods?", presented by Laura Jacoby, granddaughter of Galen Biery. This program is presented in local area schools, community centers, libraries, and senior centers.

Laura Jacoby shares her wealth of knowledge about the history of Whatcom County and presents her grandfather's "Magic Lantern Slide Show", along with museum quality artifacts. These images and items would not normally be viewed by the general public as they are privately owned by the Jacoby Family.

Laura works with local groups designing presentations specifically for particular audiences. She has presented "What's in the Woods?" to young school aged children studying Washington State history and Pioneer Studies. The feedback she has received has been really wonderful!

She'd be delighted to present to your school or group! Contact Laura directly for information about the process.
